History of the Evening Glove

Evening gloves are great for adding the finishing touch on that dress or gown when a special occasion necessitates one looking as elegant as possible. Such gloves can be found as early as the mid to late 1600s when The Queen of England (Queen Mary) is depicted in art designs wearing elbow length gloves. No doubtedly a move that had the entire court buzzing back in that early day. Since that time, the over the elbow type of glove never reached a level of great popularity. While they were seen throughout the Victorian period through the mid nineteenth century, these type of extra long gloves really took off and were in the highest demand in the late 1800s until the start of the first world war. It was not uncommon to be seen in this type of glove in the evening as well as the daytime with most type of ensembles. During this period, gloves were thought to be a required accessory for both men and women. Hats were viewed in the same regard. Today, both hats and evening gloves are thought to be less trendy and more of an avant-garde way of dressing up for an evening that is not only special, but maybe also a little playful.
